CAPA is pleased to introduce Author Crystal Ratcliff

1. How long have you been writing?

I started writing in 1999 when I became a stay-at-home mom.

2. Can you point to one thing as your inspiration to write?

My inspiration to write has definitely come from the Lord. I believe that He has called me to write for Him, to use this talent He has given me for Him.

 3. Where do you get your story ideas?

Most often my story ideas center around a spiritual lesson that I want to convey through the story. Once I know the spiritual lesson, I brainstorm ideas and the main characters begin to take shape.

4. Tell us about a typical day in the life of Crystal Ratcliff.

A typical day? Oh, boy...4:45 a.m. Alarm sounds. 5:00 a.m. Arrive at the YMCA and begin workout. 5:40 a.m. Back home again and start to get ready for the day before settling in for my personal Bible study and prayer time. 6:20 a.m. Wake up kids and help them with their devotions, eat breakfast, and finish getting ready. 7:10 a.m. Out the door and on our way to school/work. 7:30 a.m. Begin my day as a school secretary/school nurse and all the fun that includes! 3:30 p.m. Official work day ends and we head home. 3:50 p.m. This is where I *try* to squeeze in some writing time! However, I also spend the afternoon checking backpacks, cleaning house, doing laundry, gardening, running errands, or making dinner. 6:00 p.m. My husband gets home and we sit down for dinner--after that it depends on the night, but we rarely stay home all evening.

5. What would be your best advice to a beginning writer?

Write from your heart and don't get caught up in all the "rules." It is important to learn the craft of writing and the business, but don't let that stifle your creativity. And most importantly, write for Him and follow His leading.

6. What does your writing space look like?

A desk with my computer in the corner of my bedroom and writing books on a nearby shelf.

7. Do you have future projects in mind?

Yes, but at this point I'm concentrating on being obedient in my writing one step at a time. Currently, I am working on a rewrite of a historical WIP.

8. Do you ever struggle the demands of both family and a writing career?

Of course! Since I went back to work, I don't have as much time for writing and that is okay with me. I know that I am called to be a wife and mother first.

9. Do you have a marketing tip that has worked well for you?

Create and maintain a website and e-newsletter so that you can keep in touch with readers.

10. Do you think it's important to get great Christian fiction into print? If so, why

I believe Christian fiction is important because Christians enjoy being able to pick up a good book that encourages us in the faith. There is great inspirational fiction available that challenges the reader to examine his or her heart and live for Christ. It is also nice to be able to give a book to an unsaved friend, knowing that the content will leave the person considering his or her condition and may open a door for witnessing.
